During the full moon of August the awesome Kataragama festival takes place deep in the jungles of Sri Lanka.
The most remarkable feature of this festival is the penchant of devotees to self mortification usually in repayment for vows undertaken by the pilgrims to their Kataragama God.
Pilgrims roll half naked over scorching ground, skewer their cheeks and out thrust tongues or suspend themselves in the air by hooks.
A great parade is held every evening as the God Kataragama is re-united with his loved one.
